Severe Heatwave and Thunderstorm Alerts Issued Across India

Heatwave Alert Across Northwest and Central India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for intense to severe heatwave conditions across large parts of northwest and central India during the coming week. According to the weather department, regions such as Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of central India are expected to experience extremely high temperatures and strong surface winds.

Among the worst-affected areas is Delhi, where daytime temperatures in isolated locations may rise up to 45 degrees Celsius. The Safdarjung weather station, which serves as Delhi’s primary weather observatory, recorded a maximum temperature of 41.9°C on Sunday, nearly two degrees above the seasonal average. In addition, strong surface winds are expected to continue across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh from May 18 to May 24.

In response to the severe weather conditions, the IMD has issued a public safety advisory. The department has urged residents to avoid prolonged exposure to heat, particularly vulnerable groups such as infants, elderly people, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses. While the heat is expected to remain tolerable for the general public, sensitive individuals may face moderate health risks. Citizens have been advised to stay hydrated by drinking water frequently, even when they do not feel thirsty. The IMD has also recommended keeping fire extinguishers at homes and inside vehicles as a precautionary measure.

Apart from the heatwave, the weather agency has also forecast scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several parts of northwest India, including Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. According to the all-India weather bulletin, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds may also affect Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh on May 18.

Meanwhile, western regions such as Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan & Goa, and Marathwada are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and strong winds in the coming days. The IMD continues to monitor the changing weather conditions and has advised citizens to remain alert and follow official updates regularly.
